Can a Mauritius Company Accept Crypto Payments Without a Bank Account?

Generally, yes. A Mauritius company can usually receive cryptocurrency into a company-controlled wallet as consideration for its own goods or services.

For a cross-border business, this may provide a useful payment route while a bank or payment institution is conducting onboarding, or where conventional providers do not support the company's markets or crypto-related customer base. The customer sends the agreed asset directly to the company's wallet, without Invoiceum or another processor taking custody.

Mauritius is not a zero-tax shell-company jurisdiction. It is a regulated international financial centre with corporate tax, substance and filing requirements. That can make the structure more operationally credible, but the company must maintain real records and governance.

Why Use a Mauritius Corporate Wallet?

A direct wallet can help a Mauritius company:

The wallet is not a shortcut around source-of-funds or sanctions controls. It also does not solve the need for fiat when the company must pay local salaries, taxes or suppliers.

Merchant Payment or Licensed VASP Activity?

The Virtual Asset and Initial Token Offering Services Act 2021 applies to virtual asset service providers carrying on business in or from Mauritius.

The Act defines a VASP as a person that, as a business, conducts exchange, transfer, safekeeping, administration or related issuance services for or on behalf of another person. It also defines a transfer of virtual assets as a transaction carried out on behalf of another person.

A merchant receiving its own revenue is therefore materially different from a business moving or holding a customer's assets. Direct merchant acceptance will generally fall outside the VASP definition where the company does not provide a crypto service to the payer.

Licensing analysis is required if the company:

Is the Company Required to Convert Crypto to Fiat?

There is no general Mauritius rule requiring an ordinary merchant to convert each crypto payment immediately into fiat. The company may generally retain the received asset, subject to its accounting policy, risk limits and corporate approvals.

The company still needs a reliable value in Mauritius rupees or its applicable reporting currency. It should preserve the exchange-rate source and timestamp at receipt, then record any later conversion, disposal or use as a separate transaction.

A bank or regulated exchange used later may ask for customer due diligence, invoices, transaction hashes and evidence that the receiving wallet belongs to the company.

Corporate Tax and Substance

The Mauritius Revenue Authority states that the general corporate income-tax rate for companies is 15%, with specific reduced rates or partial exemptions for qualifying income and activities.

Partial exemption is not an automatic low-tax rate for ordinary service or trading revenue. The MRA lists the qualifying categories and requires applicable companies to carry out core income-generating activities in Mauritius, maintain adequate qualified personnel and incur proportionate expenditure.

Receiving crypto changes the payment medium, not the character of the company's business income. The revenue should be recognised and valued under the same tax and accounting framework that would apply if the customer paid by bank transfer.

How to Use Invoiceum in Mauritius

Invoiceum.com can provide the invoice and reconciliation layer while the Mauritius company keeps control of the receiving wallet.

The invoice should include:

  1. Company legal name, business registration and tax details.
  2. Customer information.
  3. Description and contractual fiat price of the supply.
  4. Cryptoasset, token contract and exact network.
  5. Company wallet address.
  6. Rate source and quote-expiry time.
  7. Required confirmations.
  8. Refund and payment-error rules.

After receipt, attach or record the transaction hash, time, token quantity and reporting-currency value against the Invoiceum invoice.

Invoiceum should not control customer funds or private keys in this model. Custody, exchange or forwarding functions could bring the wider service within the VAITOS licensing perimeter.

Recommended Mauritius Workflow

  1. Confirm that the payment is for the company's own commercial supply.
  2. Review the company's Global Business or domestic-company conditions where applicable.
  3. Adopt a board-approved multi-signature wallet policy.
  4. Screen the customer and wallet proportionately.
  5. Issue a fiat-denominated Invoiceum invoice with precise network instructions.
  6. Record the fiat value and transaction hash at receipt.
  7. Reconcile the cryptoasset to the ledger.
  8. Maintain evidence for the management company, auditor, bank or exchange.

Generally, yes, if the payment is for the company's own goods or services and the company's licence conditions and activities permit the underlying business.

Does receiving crypto require a VASP licence?

Not ordinarily when the company receives its own payment. Services involving exchange, custody, administration or transfer for another person can require licensing.

Is fiat conversion compulsory?

No general immediate-conversion requirement applies to an ordinary merchant. Proper valuation, accounting and tax reporting remain compulsory.

Is Mauritius a zero-tax offshore company?

No. The standard company rate is 15%, while reduced rates and partial exemptions apply only to specified cases and conditions.

How can Invoiceum help if the company has no bank account?

Invoiceum can give the customer formal wallet-payment instructions and connect the resulting blockchain transaction to the commercial invoice. It does not itself supply fiat banking.
