Can an Estonian Company Accept Cryptocurrency Payments?

Yes. An Estonian company can generally receive Bitcoin, Ether, a stablecoin or another supported cryptoasset as consideration for its own goods or services.

This guide focuses on direct payment into a non-custodial wallet controlled by the company, rather than collection through a custodial crypto payment processor.

The company should record the revenue and cryptoasset in euros, apply the normal VAT treatment and keep evidence connecting the customer, invoice, wallet and transaction.

MiCA and the Estonian CASP Regime

Estonia's transition for legacy virtual-asset service providers ended on 30 June 2026. From 1 July 2026, the Estonian Financial Supervision and Resolution Authority states that cryptoasset services may be provided only by a company holding MiCA authorisation from Finantsinspektsioon or another EEA authority.

MiCA services include client custody, exchange, trading-platform operation, order services and transfer of cryptoassets on behalf of clients.

Receiving consideration for the merchant's own supply is not one of those listed services. A separate analysis is required if the company also controls or moves customer assets.

When Could an Estonian Company Need a CASP Licence?

The business should obtain a regulatory review if it:

Finantsinspektsioon maintains the authorisation process and supervised-entity lists for Estonian and cross-border CASPs.

Revenue Valuation and Crypto Records

The Estonian Tax and Customs Board states that taxable income received in cryptoassets is taxed on similar principles to income received in traditional currencies. The amount must be converted into euros using the market price valid on the date the income is received or the expense incurred.

For a company receiving payment, record:

The original sale and any later gain or loss should be identifiable as separate events.

Estonia's Distributed-Profit Tax System

Estonia generally shifts company income taxation from the moment profit is earned to the moment it is distributed. The Tax and Customs Board states that resident companies pay corporate income tax when profit is distributed as dividends or in another taxable form, as well as on specified non-business payments and benefits.

Receiving crypto therefore still requires full accounting recognition even though retained profit is not taxed under the conventional annual corporate-income-tax model. The standard distributed-profit rate is stated as 22/78 from 2025.

VAT and Invoice Requirements

Crypto payment does not change the VAT status of the underlying sale. The Estonian invoice must show the required supplier, customer, invoice, supply and price information. The Tax and Customs Board states that VAT payable must be shown in euros.

The cryptoasset amount and wallet details can appear as payment instructions, but they do not replace the euro taxable amount and VAT information.

EU Travel Rule and an Estonian Company Wallet

Where a CASP is involved, Regulation (EU) 2023/1113 requires transfer information. For transfers above EUR 1,000 between a CASP and its client's self-hosted address, the CASP must verify ownership or control of that address.

The company may need to provide a wallet signature or corporate-control documents. The rule does not prohibit larger self-hosted-wallet payments.

How to Use Invoiceum in Estonia

Invoiceum.com can structure the invoice and on-chain payment record for an Estonian company, including one managed by e-residents.

Recommended invoice information includes:

  1. Company name, registry code, address and VAT number where applicable.
  2. Customer information.
  3. Sequential invoice number and dates.
  4. Description, euro price, taxable amount and VAT.
  5. Token, smart-contract address and network.
  6. company-controlled wallet.
  7. Rate source, quote expiry and confirmations.
  8. Refund and incorrect-network terms.

After payment, link the invoice to the transaction hash, receipt time, euro value and ledger entry.

Invoiceum should not be described as providing an Estonian CASP licence, final tax calculation or VAT filing unless current product documentation expressly confirms the relevant service. E-residency also does not by itself determine the company's tax residence or eliminate foreign permanent-establishment risks.

Recommended Estonian Workflow

  1. Confirm that the payment is for the company's own goods or services.
  2. Check that no custody, exchange or client-transfer activity is included.
  3. Price the transaction and calculate VAT in euros.
  4. Issue the invoice through Invoiceum with precise wallet instructions.
  5. Complete proportionate customer, sanctions and wallet screening.
  6. Record the euro market value at receipt.
  7. Reconcile the cryptoasset and revenue in the accounts.
  8. Track later asset movements and taxable profit distributions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an Estonian OÜ accept Bitcoin for services?

Yes, subject to ordinary accounting, tax, VAT and compliance obligations.

Does it need a MiCA licence?

Not generally merely to receive payment for its own supply. Providing custody, exchange, transfer or another listed cryptoasset service to clients requires authorisation.

When does an Estonian company pay corporate income tax?

Estonia generally taxes company profit when it is distributed rather than when it is earned. The company must still recognise crypto revenue and assets correctly in its accounts.

Must VAT be shown in euros?

Yes. The Estonian Tax and Customs Board states that VAT payable on the invoice must be indicated in euros.

Does e-residency change the crypto-payment rules?

No. E-residency is a digital identity and company-management framework; it does not itself settle licensing, tax-residence or permanent-establishment questions.
