Can a Bahamian Company Accept Crypto Payments Without a Bank Account?

Potentially, yes. A company in The Bahamas can generally structure a direct payment into its own corporate wallet where the customer is paying for the company's own goods or services and the company is not providing a regulated digital-asset or payment service.

This can be a useful alternative collection route when bank onboarding is lengthy or a conventional payment processor will not support the company's geography or industry. The customer transfers the cryptoasset to a wallet controlled by the merchant, without an intermediary holding the proceeds.

The Bahamas has a broad and mature digital-asset framework. Because DARE 2024 expressly covers payment service providers using digital assets, the precise distinction between an ordinary merchant and a crypto payment business should be confirmed for the actual payment flow.

A Corporate Wallet as an Alternative to Payment-Account Onboarding

For suitable customers, direct on-chain payment can provide:

The wallet does not provide a fiat account, consumer deposit protection or access to all suppliers. The company should maintain a plan for taxes, payroll, refunds and other fiat obligations.

DARE 2024 and the Merchant–Payment Provider Boundary

The Digital Assets and Registered Exchanges Act 2024 came into force on 29 July 2024. The Securities Commission of The Bahamas states that digital asset business includes:

An ordinary merchant receiving its own sales revenue is not normally described as providing payment services to the customer. Nevertheless, DARE's breadth means local advice is appropriate before launching a high-volume or automated merchant-payment system.

Registration analysis is particularly important if the company:

Is Immediate Fiat Conversion Required?

There is no general rule requiring an ordinary merchant to convert every crypto receipt immediately into Bahamian or US dollars. The company may generally retain the asset in its treasury wallet, subject to its governance and accounting policy.

The company must still determine a reliable fiat value for the sale and preserve evidence of how that value was calculated. Later conversion, disposal or payment with the asset should be recorded separately.

If the company later approaches a bank or regulated exchange, the provider may require invoices, customer records, wallet-control evidence and blockchain-risk information.

Business Licence Tax, VAT and Large-Group Tax

The Bahamas does not rely on a conventional corporate income-tax system for ordinary companies, but businesses should not describe the jurisdiction as cost- or tax-free.

The Business Licence Act uses a turnover-based regime for business carried on in or from within The Bahamas and expressly includes money and money's worth in turnover. Crypto consideration should therefore not be ignored merely because it did not enter a bank account.

VAT applies to taxable supplies under the Bahamian rules, with a standard rate of 7.5%. A crypto payment changes the settlement method, not the VAT character of the underlying supply.

The Domestic Minimum Top-Up Tax Act 2024 applies to qualifying large multinational groups under the detailed GloBE thresholds and rules.

How to Use Invoiceum in The Bahamas

Invoiceum.com can provide a structured invoice before the customer sends crypto directly to the company's own wallet.

Recommended fields include:

  1. Company legal and business-licence details.
  2. Customer and supply information.
  3. Contractual fiat amount and applicable VAT.
  4. Token, contract and network.
  5. Company receiving address.
  6. Rate source and quote-expiry time.
  7. Confirmation requirements.
  8. Refund and payment-error terms.

After settlement, record the transaction hash, timestamp, token amount and fiat value against the Invoiceum invoice and books.

Invoiceum should not receive or forward the asset in this direct-wallet model. Taking possession of the payment or settling it onward could create a payment-service or digital-asset-business issue under DARE.

Recommended Bahamian Workflow

  1. Confirm the payment is for the company's own supply.
  2. Obtain advice on the DARE perimeter for the full checkout flow.
  3. Approve supported tokens and networks internally.
  4. Use a multi-signature corporate wallet.
  5. Screen customers and wallet risk proportionately.
  6. Issue the fiat and VAT invoice through Invoiceum.
  7. Record and reconcile the on-chain receipt.
  8. Preserve the evidence for tax, banking and off-ramp reviews.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a Bahamian company accept Bitcoin or a stablecoin directly?

Generally, it may structure payment into its own wallet for its own supply. A high-volume, automated or third-party payment service requires separate DARE analysis.

Does the company need a bank account first?

Not technically to receive a blockchain payment. Fiat infrastructure may still be needed for taxes, expenses and conversions.

Is conversion to fiat mandatory?

No general immediate-conversion requirement applies to an ordinary merchant. Fiat valuation and tax records remain necessary.

Does crypto revenue count for Business Licence Tax or VAT?

Using crypto does not by itself remove turnover or VAT obligations. The underlying supply and its money's-worth value must be analysed.

What is Invoiceum's role?

Invoiceum can document the customer debt and payment instructions while the company receives funds directly. It should not be presented as a DARE licence or bank account.
